PAUM25

Pregunta 1 · True or false + evidence 1 p.

  3. Copia solo la línea necesaria, entre comillas.

Island life without plastic

[1] For decades, small islands have imported almost everything they consume, and much of it arrives wrapped in plastic. [2] When the packaging is thrown away, there is often nowhere to put it: landfills are small and recycling plants are expensive to run. [3] As a result, some island communities have decided to tackle the problem at its source.

[4] On several islands, shops now sell rice, beans and soap from large containers, and customers bring their own bags and bottles. [5] Local markets have also banned single-use plastic bags. [6] At first, many shop owners were worried that tourists would complain. [7] However, most visitors have welcomed the changes, and some even choose their holiday destination for this reason.

[8] Not everybody agrees, though. [9] Some residents say that buying without packaging takes more time and that products are sometimes more expensive. [10] Experts accept these criticisms, but they insist that the long-term benefits for beaches, fishing and tourism are much greater than the costs.

Glossary: landfill = vertedero · source = origen · single-use = de un solo uso · to ban = prohibir

True or false?

Pregunta 2 · Answer in your own words 2 p.

Cambia la estructura (activa ↔ pasiva), usa sinónimos y conectores (because, so, however).

a) Why is plastic waste a special problem on small islands?

b) What arguments do people use against the new way of shopping?

Pregunta 3 · Choose the correct answer 2 p.

Lo que más sale: tiempos verbales (present perfect continuous, past continuous + past simple, past perfect), artículos y some/any, reflexivos / each other, preposiciones (in/on/at, by boat), comparativos y superlativos, modales (should, must), condicionales y question tags.

Grammar

Pregunta 4 · Match both columns 2 p.

Fíjate en los tiempos verbales y en los conectores (when, since, for, after).

Método para unir las mitades

  1. Lee cada inicio y anota qué exige: sujeto y concordancia (he has / they have), tiempo verbal, y si la frase queda abierta con una coma o un conector.
  2. Descarta por gramática: concordancia sujeto-verbo, since + punto de inicio frente a for + duración, relación de anterioridad entre hechos pasados (el conector por sí solo no impone un tiempo), past continuous + when + past simple.

Entre los finales ofrecidos, «for more than forty minutes» expresa una duración compatible con «They have been waiting for the bus»; también sería posible un inicio con since en otro contexto. «After she had finished the exam,» termina en coma y necesita una oración principal en pasado posterior: «she went for a coffee with her friends».

Variante breve

  1. By the time we reached the beach,
  2. My neighbours have been building their house
  3. The children were sleeping
  1. for almost two years.
  2. when the storm started.
  3. the sun had already set.
  4. since they has moved here.
Mostrar solución de la variante
  • 1 – c: By the time we reached the beach, the sun had already set. (By the time + pasado; la puesta de sol es anterior: past perfect.)
  • 2 – a: My neighbours have been building their house for almost two years. (Actividad que continúa; for + duración.)
  • 3 – b: The children were sleeping when the storm started. (Acción en curso interrumpida: past continuous + when + past simple.)
  • d se descarta: «they has» no concuerda; sería «they have moved» o «they moved».

Ejemplo Resuelto:
After he had worked all night, he attended the meeting without resting, even though he was exhausted.

Even though she was tired, she checked the references instead of relying on memory before she submitted her essay.

- Concesión: Emplear although / even though seguido de sujeto y verbo conjugado (she was tired).
- Concordancia de referencias (she) y puntuación.

Pregunta 5 · Writing (A) o biografía ordenada (B) 3 p.

Respeta su tiempo verbal (would like → deseo; have ever visited → experiencia).
  3. Elige conectores según la relación real: firstly / also para añadir, because / so para causa y consecuencia, however para un contraste.

  2. Ordena las frases con fecha o edad.
  3. Coloca las frases sin fecha por sus conectores y referentes: «Some years later» necesita un hecho anterior; «there» o «he/she» necesitan que el lugar o la persona ya hayan aparecido; «In his last years» y la muerte van al final.

«In his last years» y su muerte en 1920 cierran la biografía.

A) Write about 100 words beginning with: «I would like to study at university because…»

B) Put the sentences in order (Benito Pérez Galdós)

Variantes breves

A) Adaptar la planificación. Consigna: «Write about 100 words beginning with: The best place I have ever visited is…».

  1. After finishing school, she studied biology in La Laguna.
  2. Carmen Ruiz was born in a fishing village in 1961.
  3. While she was working there, she discovered a new species of sponge.
  4. In 1990 she got a job at a marine research centre.
  5. She retired in 2024, but she still gives talks in schools.
